There will be a library board meeting at 5:30 pm on Thursday, September 3. It will be held in the library.
The Library will be hosting a special program on Saturday, September 5, at 1:00 pm in an effort to help the youth of Henderson County. The program is titled “How to Achieve Peak Athletic Performance in Youth.” This session will be taught by Dr. Stephen Merrill. It is free and open to the public.
The library will be closed on Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day.
Preschool Story Time will meet on Tuesday, September 8, at 10 am. The topic of the week will be the letter “c”.

Library News for August 24, 2009

Preschool Story Time will be meeting on Tuesday, September 1, at 10 am. They will be studying about the letter “B” and the color “Brown”. Come join us for an hour of singing, reading, and crafts.
The library will host a special session on September 5 at 1:00 pm titled “How to Achieve Peak Athletic Performance in Youth.” If you have a child playing sports, you will not want to miss this free workshop. Registration is not required.
The Beech River Writer’s Group will not be meeting in August or September.
The Library Friends have decided to postpone their fall yard sale until the spring. They will continue to collect items for this sale. If you have anything you would like to donate, just drop it off at the library or call 968-3239 to arrange a pick up. Don’t forget to stop by their booth at the Henderson County Fair.
The Henderson County Imagination Library will have a display at the Lexington High School football game this Friday night. If you stop by their table and make a donation (any amount), you will receive a valuable coupon from Dairy Queen and the opportunity to win a $50 gift card from Wal-Mart.

The Library Book Club will be meeting on Thursday, August 20th, at 1:00 pm to discuss “The Road Less Traveled” by M. Scott Peck. You are invited to attend.
The Library Friends will be meeting on Thursday, August 20th, at 5:00 pm. They will be discussing their fall activities. Please attend this meeting if you are willing to help. Activities include a fair booth in September, a yard sale in October, and a used book sale in December. They continually accept donations for the yard sale and used book sale. You may drop off donations at the library.
Preschool Story Time is back in session. It is held each Tuesday at 10 am in the library’s community room. Bring your little one and join us for an hour of fun and learning.
Tuesday, August 25, at 4:00 pm, Director Harris will be offering an informational session titled “How to use a Flash Drive.” This session is free and open to the public.
The library is also offering free email classes. Call the library at 968-3239 if you would like to register.

The library is having a fine free period through August 15 to help kids get in good standing for the new school year. Anyone who has outstanding overdue fines can call and have them erased. Any overdue materials returned during this time will not be charged a fee.
During the month of August, we have been offering some special programs for adults. Two Tuesday evening classes are scheduled from 4:00-5:00 pm: August 18-Beginner’s Selling on eBay and August 25-How to use a Flash Drive. You do not have to register for these programs.
Preschool Story Time will be starting back on August 18 at 10:00 am.

The winners of our Teen Summer Reading Prizes are as follows: Edward Fields won the Twilight Saga, Jesse Bradford won the Books-A-Million gift certificate, and Haley Perry won the portable DVD player. Congratulations to these avid readers! Thanks to all the teens who participated.

The library is having a fine free period from August 1 through August 15 to help kids get in good standing for the new school year. Anyone who has outstanding overdue fines can call and have them erased. Any overdue materials returned during this time will not be charged a fee.

During the month of August, we are offering some special programs for adults. You do not have to register for these programs.

We are also offering beginner’s email classes in August. These will be held on Wednesday mornings from 9:00-10:00. You must register for these classes. Stop by the library, or call us at 968-3239.

Preschool Story Time will be starting back early this year in keeping with the public school’s schedule. There will be an organizational meeting on August 11 at 10 am. Our current Story Time Director, Jennifer Franklin, will not be able to be in charge of the programs this year. If you are willing to assist in helping with Preschool Story Time, we need you at the August 11 meeting.

Mrs. Ruth Hardin has donated a copy of the book “The Only Guide to Alternative Investments You’ll Ever Need” to the library. Her grandson, Jared Kizer, is the co-author. The book is donated in memory of Tom Frank Hardin and James Paley Kizer, Sr.

The Henderson County Folk Festival gave away a country ham on June 1. The winner was Kenneth Smith.

The Teen Summer Reading Program continues through Friday, July 31. At 3:00 pm on Friday, prize winners will be drawn. You still have time to participate. Come by today!
The library is offering some special services for the unemployed. Library staff will assist anyone needing to fill out unemployment benefit applications on the Internet or weekly recertification. Just please call the library in advance to make sure adequate staff are on hand for the time you want to come. If you need copies of your resume, the library is making up to three copies for free. Also, on August 4, from 4:00-5:00 pm, the library will offer a special session titled “Job Searching on the Internet.” No registration is required.
We are continuing to register people for the free email classes that will be held in August. If you would like to learn how to do email, give us a call. We also have several special computer classes for adults scheduled in August. No registration is required for the following sessions: August 11, Beginner’s Buying on eBay; August 18, Beginner’s Selling on eBay; and, August 25, How to use a Flash Drive.
The library will have a fine free period from August 1 through August 15 to help kids get ready for back to school needs. If you have materials that are overdue, return them during this time, and you will not be charged a fee. If you have outstanding fines, call during this period, and they will be erased.
The library is accepting sealed bids on a used computer and desk we have for sale. Bids will be accepted through August 4.

Our Teen Summer Reading Program lasts through July 31. Prizes include a hardback set of the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer, a $100 gift certificate from Books-A-Million, and a portable DVD player. Youth between 7th and 12th grades receive one free entry for every book read. The drawings will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday, July 31.
The winning poster numbers for the WWE package are posted at the library. If you were one of the few who received a poster, please come by and check for your number.
The library has one used computer that is being auctioned. It is a Gateway PC with Windows 2000, 36 GB hard drive, and 256 MB RAM. It has a floppy drive, a CD-ROM drive, and USB hookups. Keyboard, mouse, speakers, and desk included. Auction will run from July 22 through August 4. The highest bidder wins.
We have several computer classes for adults scheduled in August. No registration is required for the following sessions: August 11, Beginner’s Buying on eBay; August 18, Beginner’s Selling on eBay; and, August 25, How to use a Flash Drive. There will also be beginner email classes held on Wednesday mornings from 9:00-10:00 am. You must register in advance for the email classes. Call 968-3239.
The library is also reaching out to the unemployed and people searching for jobs. The library is offering assistance with anyone needing to fill out unemployment benefit applications on the Internet or weekly recertification. July is Teen Summer Reading month. During the entire month, youth entering 7th through 12th grades may receive one prize entry for every book they read. Prizes will be drawn for on July 31 and include the following: a hardback set of the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer with four full-color collectible prints, a portable DVD player, and a $100 gift card to Books-A-Million.

The Library Book Club will be meeting on July 16 at 1:00 pm to discuss “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett. You are invited to participate.

The Library Friends will not be meeting in July, but they are collecting donations for their fall yard sale and used book sale. If you have any items you would like to donate, please drop them off at the library.

We just finished our special children’s programming for the summer and are now ready to begin our focus on the teens. Our Teen Summer Reading Program begins July 1. Youth who will be entering the 7th through the 12th grades in the fall are invited to participate. For every book checked out from the library and read during the month of July, the teen will receive one entry for the prizes to be given away. Prizes will be drawn for on July 31 at 3:00 pm. Prizes include the following: a complete hardback set of the Twilight Saga collection by Stephenie Meyer which also includes four full-color collectible prints, a $100 gift card to Books-A-Million, and a portable DVD player.
There will be a Library Board meeting at the library on Thursday, July 2, at 5:30.
The library will be closed on Saturday, July 4, for the holiday.
The Library Book Club will be meeting on Thursday, July 16, at 1 pm, to discuss “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett.

The Everett Horn Library will have another great program for the children on Friday, June 26, at 10 am. Special guest will be Magician Justin Chandler. This will be the final program for this year’s summer reading program. All children present will receive a small prize for participating this summer.
The Library is also participating in a national promotional campaign. Beginning Wednesday, June 24, the first 25 youth between the ages of 10 and 18 who check out two books from the library will receive a free WWE Superstars poster. Each poster is numbered. On Friday, July 17, two poster numbers will be drawn out of all entries over the United States, and two people will win grand prize packages consisting of airfare for two to Los Angeles, two tickets and $200 spending money for WWE’s SummerSlam pay-per-view event on Sunday, August 23, at the Staples Center in Lost Angeles. Ten prize winners will receive free copies of the WWE Encyclopedia.
Our Teen Summer Reading Program will begin July 1. Teens may read for prizes. More details will be provided next week.
If you love your I-pod, you will be glad to know that many of our free audio books available through READS (http://reads.lib.overdrive.com ) are now I-pod compatible.
