Library News for October 27

October 27, 2008

The Showcase of Local Artists will continue through October 31. We have a nice collection of paintings, drawings, photography, needlepoint, and decorated gourds. Our talented artists are as follows: Janice Beal, Barbara Britt, Ronnie Burton, Janice Davis, Linda Goodman, Julia Annice McBee, Sandy Pratt, Ron Reese, Donna Simmons, Judy Williams, and Paul Williams. Be sure and stop by to take a look.

Preschool Story Time will also be meeting on November 4, at 10 am at the library.

Please mark your calendar for November 14. The young adult group “Will Tell” will be performing at the Lexington Civic Center to raise money for the library’s Summer Reading Program. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the library.

The Library has implemented a couple of new money saving procedures that I would like to explain. Anyone who uses the library’s computers has always been able to print from them for a charge of .15 cents per page. You may still do this. However, when you click print, you will now need to go to the front desk and ask for the print job to be released. All prints must be paid for in advance. Also, the library has allowed the public to make copies from the copier for .15 cents per page. This is a service we will still offer. However, the copier has been moved behind the service desk, and the staff will be making all copies. Every copy must be paid for, and it must be paid for in advance. These two measures will eliminate any waste of paper and ink that we have experienced in the past.

The library has offered an Interlibrary Loan service now for several years. Whenever the library does not have a book, we can request to borrow it from another library. This service is only offered to established patrons who have a good record of returning materials. Due to the guidelines for participating in this program, we cannot charge for this service. However, we are asking that patrons who take advantage of this service and who are able to make a donation to cover the cost of postage to please do so.

Library News for October 20, 2008

October 20, 2008
This week is National Friends of the Library week, and I am proud to say that we have one of the best groups around. Our “Library Friends” work hard to raise much needed money for the library to buy new books and other materials. They also pay for the t-shirts that are handed out to pre-kindergarten kids at our annual “Countdown to Kindergarten” each year. There are other great things they have done for the library over the years, and we are very grateful for all their help. I honestly don’t know how we could make it without them.

Membership in the Library Friends is only $10 per person. If you are a student or someone 60 or older, membership is only $5 per year. Your membership fees go a long helping do things for the library. Currently there are around 115 members of the Library Friends. We would love for you to be a part of this group. You may contact the libary at 968-3239 if you need more information.

Preschool Story Time will also be meeting on October 28, at 10 am at the library.

The Library will be hosting a Showcase of Local Artists from October 23- October 31. We are looking for Henderson County residents who would like to display their own original framed artwork. This includes painting, drawings, and photography. A special “Meet the Artists” reception will be held on Thursday, October 23, at 5 pm. The artists of displayed works will be present to discuss their techniques and tips. If you would like to participate, please call the library at 968-3239.

Teens between the 7th-12th grades may bring their decorated pumpkins to the library on Friday, October 24, or Saturday, October 25. Patrons will vote on the best pumpkins. Winners will be announced October 31.

The Library Board met on September 30, 2008. The majority of the meeting was spent trying to figure out how to come up with some money to buy library materials. As you know, Mr. Everett Horn left the library an irrevocable trust fund. The library receives the interest from this trust each year. We recently received word that we would only receive $10,000 in profits this year instead of the usual $23,000. That meant we had to look at our budget and cut $13,000. To make up some of the difference, we will begin charging individuals a $50 deposit to use the library’s community room; Twenty dollars will be refunded when the key is returned. This will go into effect on January 1, 2009. Some discussion followed of whether to raise the charge for copies, but we decided to hold off on that move for the present. We will be implementing measures to eliminate wasted copies; this will involve the staff unlocking your print jobs before you can print them. This will be a small inconvenience on customers and staff, but we must find ways to cut expenses. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

If you would like to assist the library during this tough time, there are several ways you can do that:

q       Make a memorial gift to the library in lieu of flowers when someone passes.

q       Give a gift in honor of someone for Christmas or Birthdays.

q       Donate your new or old books to the library; new ones will go in the collection, and old ones can be sold to raise money.

q       Donate items for the Library Friends’ annual yard sale. We have a shed so we can take them at any time.

q       Join the Library Friends group and help with their fundraisers.

q       Make a tax-deductible gift of money to the library.
