Our final Summer Reading Program for the summer will be on Friday, June 27, at 10:00 am. Our special guest will be Flumpa, the famous tree frog. (www.flumpa.com) “Flumpa and Friends LIVE!” is the #1 science school assembly program in the country.  Flumpa brings science to life with music, fitness and fun. He will be presenting his “Out of this world!” program at the library in keeping with our space theme. Don’t forget to bring your reading logs on Friday. Each child who turns in a reading log will receive a small prize.

Once again, we would like to thank our sponsors for helping us bring these fantastic educating entertainers to the children of our county. The money for these program is not in our budget, so we could not do it without our sponsors: Carnal-Roberts Agency, Dr. David Lawler, O.D., Dyer’s Employment Agency, Dr. Charles White, Sr., Helms Motor Company, In His Hands, Lexington Animal Hospital, Lexington Broadcasting, McDonald’s, Pafford Funeral Home, and Precise Rebuilders. Thank you so much for enriching the lives of our children!

Teens have just a few more days to read a few more books before our June 30th drawing for prizes. Every book read receives one entry in the drawings.

We are continually working on our web page and making improvements to serve you better. You now can click on the Heritage Quest link and access this database from your home computers. Heritage Quest is an online genealogy research database. When asked for a barcode number, you will just need to enter the letters EHL followed by your library card number.

We are not having any special programs for teens this year. However, we are having a contest where youth may read for prizes. This promotion is for youth entering the 7th grade through 18 years old. Youth may check out books at the library and receive one entry for every book read. Prizes drawn for are as follows: I-pod, portable DVD player, and $50 cash. Each teen that fills out our teen survey will receive 3 free entries. The drawing for these prizes will be held on June 30 at 3 pm.

The Library Book Club will be meeting on Thursday, June 19, at 1 pm. They will be discussing Randy Pausch’s book, The Last Lecture. This book is the true story of Mr. Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, who was asked to give a lecture. He had just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. The lecture he gave was titled “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.” It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, and of seizing every moment. The book, The Last Lecture, was born out of the actual lecture but includes many personal stories that were not included in the lecture. It is a short, easy read that you will find very inspiring. We also have the book on CD.

Since school is out, I would like to go over our policy regarding children/youth and the library. If a child is under 12 years old, he/she must be accompanied by an adult while at the library. Any youth under the age of 16 left at the library must be picked up by closing time.

The policy on computer use is as follows: if a child is not a teenager (under 13), he/she must be accompanied by a parent when using the library’s computers. The parent can also fill out a form giving permission to another adult (such as a babysitter, grandparent, etc.) to be present when the child is using the computer. If a youth is 13 years old but under 18, the parent has three options. The parent must be present when their child uses the computer, appoint someone else who can be present, or sign a form giving the child permission to be on the computer without any adult supervision.

I say all that to say this. We do have filters on our computers, but filters are not 100% effective. Also, email, chat rooms, and other social networking sites are NOT blocked. If you give your child permission to use a computer, they will have access to these sites, and you must accept full responsibility for what they access. The library does not have sufficient staff to monitor your child’s usage of the Internet.

We want kids and youth to use our computers, but we want to protect them from the dangers of the Internet at the same time. We have chosen to do that by installing filters (which are actually mandatory by law-Children’s Internet Protection Act) and requiring parent’s to accept responsibility for their children’s Internet usage. If you have any questions about this, please call the library at 968-3239 and ask for Dinah.
