As you know, TV’s will be switching to digital in February of 2009. In preparation for this switch, the government is offering a $40 coupon to help defray the cost when purchasing converter boxes. If you would like to apply for a coupon, you may do so at www.dtv2009.gov. If you need help with this, just contact us here at the library (968-3239), and we can help you with the short application.

There is a new set of free parent-child early literacy materials, on the Internet, titled “On the Go”.  These materials include 14 activities designed to be used outside the home:  in the car, while walking, during bus rides, etc.  The activities encourage early language and literacy development from birth through preschool.  They are appropriate for children with disabilities as well as children who are developing typically. To download materials go to www.walearning.com  and click on the purple button that says “Free Parent Education Handouts” on the home page.  Look for the “On the Go” file to download the materials in PDF format.

If you have not visited the library’s new web site ( www.everetthornlibrary.org ), please do so when you get the chance. A feature I would like to mention this week is our “Links”. Here you will find links to free online audio books, the Tennessee Electronic Library, and other local and state web sites.

We have recently begun a new outreach to the Spanish speaking community. A young lady named Esmeralda Yañez will be on hand for a couple of hours a week to assist Spanish speaking patrons with their informational needs. If you know someone who would need her assistance, please tell them to come by the library on Wednesdays between 12 and 2:30 pm.

It is my understanding that the Commercial Appeal newspaper has ceased home delivery in Henderson County. If you would like to read the Commercial Appeal, you may do so by going to the Library’s website www.everetthornlibrary.org and clicking on the “Newspapers” icon on the home page. Here you will find access to many of the larger newspapers in Tennessee including The Tennessean and The Knoxville News-Sentinel to name a few. Call the library first at 968-3239 for a username and password.

The Library Friends’ Yard Sale will be held from April 30-May 3 in the library community room. They will continue accepting donations this week.

The Henderson County Folk Festival will be held on Court Square on May 10 beginning at 10 am and lasting until 3:30 or 4:00. A combination of over 40 different vendors, crafters, exhibits, entertainers, and non-profits will be participating.

Crafters will include bee keeping, butter churning, canning, flint napping, quilting, spinning, weaving, and whittling.

Various food booths will sell freshly made lemonade, fried pork rinds, fried pies, fresh baked goods made from scratch, smoked meat, cornbread, white beans, and fat back. The Folk Festival booth will also sell grilled hamburgers and hotdogs to help pay for festival expenses.

Exhibits will include Civil War Dress, World War II airplane models, an old wringer type washing machine, and herbs.

A few live animals are scheduled to be on hand.

There will be a special tent where DVDs of local history can be viewed. (If anyone has one in their own collection they would like to share, contact Dinah at the library, 968-3239.)

There will be an antique car show featuring pre-1970 automobiles. Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.

There will be an “Old Western Stars” trivia contest for the adults and old-time games for the children (and children at heart).

Live music will feature local and regional entertainers performing folk, bluegrass, gospel, and Negro spirituals. Singers/Musicians are Harry and David Wolf Band, Peckerwood Pickers, Joy Johnson, Robert Taylor, Ellis Truett and Sammy McAdams Band, Andy Avery, Fate Britt Band, and Earnest Wood and the Natchez Brass.

There will be door prizes drawn for throughout the day thanks to the generosity of downtown businesses. Register at the Library’s booth on the day of the Festival.

There will be a raffle of a country ham. Raffle tickets can be obtained at the library (before the Festival) or at the library’s booth (the day of the Festival).

To go along with the Folk Festival, Mr. Ellis Truett has loaned the library some of his antique harmonicas for display. The display includes (among other kinds) echo harps, a Marine Orchestra (harmonica with bells on top), and a harmonica that has four harmonicas built into one instrument. You may view these at the library anytime during library hours.
